What You Need To Know About Dog Training Collars

In recent years, dog training has become a multi-billion dollar industry, leading numerous companies to create new and improved dog training collars to help owners teach their new additions how to behave. These collars come in a variety of different styles and each may be used for a different type of dog or different type of training experience. The decision of which type of training collar to use depends on the personal preference of the dog's owner or professional trainer along with what the actual training lesson will entail.

Slip Training Collar
One of the most common types of dog training collars used today is the slip training collar, also known derisively as a choke collar although this is not the intent of the training collar. These types of collars are used to teach a dog several basic commands, such as sit, stay, and heel, and are effective at teaching the dog not to pull away or run from the trainer because the more they struggle against the leash, the more uncomfortable the collar becomes. For some breeds of dog, such as the Rottweiler, the skin and muscles of the neck are so thick and stiff that the slip dog training collars must incorporate small spikes or prongs to be an effective deterrent for the dog.

Electronic Dog Training Collar
Another common type of dog training collars that are being used extensively in the dog training industry is the electronic dog training collar. These types of collars can generally be found in any pet supply store and can be used to correct a large number of behaviors that the dog's owner may find offensive or in need of corrective training. Electronic training collars come with a wide range of features and operating modes that allow the owner to choose the collar that is right for their needs and their dog.

Electronic dog training collars can be operated remotely by the dog's owner or the professional trainer and some training collars are activated by the action of the dog, such as training collars designed to discourage barking. The best electronic collars come with multiple setting levels as the discomfort level of some dogs can be higher or lower than the discomfort level of other dogs of the same size or breed.

These collars are not intended to punish the dog for misdeeds, as most trainers know that negative reinforcement is the least effective way of training, but to gently dissuade the dog from doing improper things by producing a strange sensation when the forbidden activity is occurring without associating the strange sensation with the activities of the trainer.
